Education: High school and a program at trade school to
learn accounting. Following that I had a career with the
State Department of Agriculture. My job, in part, was to
measure acreage for farms to plant their allotment, since
the farmers were limited as to how much they could plant.
After I retired from that I worked summers for them for some
8 to 10 years.
Spouse: Harry worked for Shell
Oil for 25 years and took an early retirement. He had no
other work interest, but after about two years went to trade
school and took some classes. Following that he took a job
with an environmental company. He traveled in the eastern
part of the U.S., bringing a portable incinerator to areas
needing to burn hazardous waste. This proved to be a second
career for him, which he performed for 10 years. It also
offered us an opportunity to see a great deal of the U.S.
Parents: Alice Herbert and
Curry Kojis. Mom was a homemaker, and she participated in
the Altar Society at St. Anthony’s. My parents are
deceased; they lived in Bunkie. My father was the Chief of
Police in Bunkie during those high school years. I was one
of 13 children. Even to this day I miss Bunkie and the old
house we lived in.
The last fifty years: I am
still part of a large family, all of whom live nearby. We
have 25 grandchildren. We spend a lot of time visiting
family members. All of these family activities keep us very
busy. Also, in the family we have every conceivable skill
one might need for maintaining our home. We get together
for birthdays. Last August there were 6 birthdays to
celebrate. Even though we traveled a great deal during my
husband's tenure with the environmental firm, today we don’t
have the need to travel. We enjoy spending our free time
interacting with family. We are involved to a small degree
with senior programs. We just celebrated our 50th
wedding anniversary.
Recollections of BHS: I had a
super time, but I hated gym. I loved Home Economics, and I
went over there as much as I could. I was close to Gail
Landry, and palled around with Lois, too.
During high school, I cooked for the
nuns at St. Anthony’s every day right after school. I just
assumed I was going to be a nun. It never crossed my mind
that I might get married until it happened.
In summary, our life has had
many challenges and we extended ourselves to meet them. We
have, however, been able to manage these challenges, which
have left us with a wonderful life.
