Education: USL, one-year
Career Interest: While
attending USL, I joined the ROTC. This resulted in me
developing a strong interest in the military. After one
year, I decided to leave college and joined the Air Force.
I spent four years in the U.S. Air Force in San Antonio at
Lackland AFB, and England AFB, in Alexandria.
Spouse: Bobby Hammons Escude
Career History: I was a drill
instructor in the Air Force and Bobby came through one of my
classes. She grew up in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, and had an
interest in the military similar to mine. Our relationship
grew and we had a military wedding at Lackland AFB. Eleven
months later, she became pregnant and the Air Force
discharged her. We had two children while I was still in
the Air Force. The first was at no cost. For the second we
got a bill for $1.95, which turned out to be the cost of a
phone call we made. I was discharged in 1961, after which
she went back to college and earned her degree. Since we
had small children, she attended a lot of night classes
while I assumed the role of baby sitter. She is now
teaching Louisiana and American history in middle school.
Parents: Benjamin & Saphora –
My father’s entire career was working for CLECO. My mother
was a homemaker.
Personal information: children
five, grandchildren eleven-- had five children in eight
years. All but two of them live in Shreveport, which is
wonderful (most of the time). This gives us plenty of
opportunity as a family to visit and for us to get to know
our grandchildren.
Leisure activities: golf,
tennis, traveling, and reading.
I continue to work in the furniture
store I own. It is a store specializing in furnishings for
middle-income persons. One of my sons is also involved, and
naturally, he does most of the work.
Major events: Going to USL, my
Air Force service for four years, five children in the eight
years, being the owner of a furniture store in Shreveport.
Recollections of BHS: Boys
State, my participation in the FFA, B.G. St. Romain and Mrs.
Hatley. I must also express my admiration of Leodocia.
Plans: Bobby plans to retire in
another year. After that we hope to do more traveling,
although we have traveled extensively during past summers.
We have been fortunate to see much of the western U.S. and
Europe.
