Career history: Thirty years in the U.S. Air Force.
Following that tour, 15 years in the banking business. I
totally retired as of January 1999.
Spouse: Eula Chaney Spence. We
met in February 1958 on a blind date. We were married in
June 1958. Eula was a homemaker who was always there for
our children.
Professional achievements:
Reached highest enlisted rank in the military. I was
Manager of a credit union branch, and was later promoted to
Chief Loan Officer. My banking career was with
Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union, a two billion dollar
plus organization.
Personal interests: traveling,
genealogy.
Children: 4, grandchildren, 8
Name of parents: Mr. and Mrs. Lee
Spence.
Leisure activities: Traveling
around this great country of ours, seeing everything we
possibly can -- genealogy -- reading.
Major events in my life:
Decision to make the military my career. Serving in several
foreign countries. Surviving two assignments in Vietnam.
Accomplishments of which I'm proud:
I have traced the family tree back to the year 1411 in Crail
on Worminston, Fife, Scotland. I'm still doing research,
trying to go back to the period prior to 1411.
Fifty-year summary: Immediately
after high school, I enrolled in Dhroughns Business College
in Baton Rouge. After three months, I decided that was not
for me. So, I enlisted in the military to find a direction
in life. After three years, I made a decision to go for a
military career. I served in exotic places like Morocco,
Guam and Hawaii. I also served in some not so exotic spots
in England and Spain, in the definitely not exotic Vietnam.
Following my second assignment in Vietnam, I was assigned to
the Pentagon for five years. During that assignment we
lived in Fairfax. Virginia. While I was in the military, we
moved the family a total of five times. My last military
assignment was in the San Antonio, Texas area. The move to
Texas was the roughest on the family, since this was the
longest we had lived in one place. But, everyone made a
quick adjustment to Texas. When I retired from the military,
we decided to make this area our home. Today, we have two
children living in Schertz, one in San Antonio, which is
close to us, and one in Biloxi, MS.
Recollections about BHS: The
things we had to do as dogs in our freshman year. The
lasting effect of Mr. St. Romain on my life, and the
1953/1954 boys basketball team. We won the first game of
the season and the last game of the season. We lost all
games in between.
