Education milestones: UALR FBI National
Academy Quantico, VA
Took college courses and many hours of
continuing training and was selected as 1 of 4 from AR to
attend the FBI National Academy in 1978. While at the NA
you can earn up to 16 college units at the Univ. of Virginia
for courses taken there. This is the premiere academy for
law enforcement officers and is being copied by many of the
states for training their officers.
Career history: 1954 to 1957 – I
had several different jobs in and around Bunkie.
In 1957 I enlisted in the Army for
three years with John "Cut-Cut" Clark. We went through
basic training at Ft. Bliss in El Paso, TX. Then we went to
the microwave repair school at Ft. Monmouth, NJ. After
graduating I was assigned to Ft. Gordon, GA. In June 1958
I was assigned to SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters, Allied
Powers, Europe) in Paris. I was sent to a microwave radio
site in Angleville, France, and later to sites in Belgium
and Germany. Our mission -- maintain communications between
HQ and three occupied zones of Germany (French, British and
American) and Supreme Headquarters. Each country’s team
cared for the site in their zone. We also had German
military assisting with maintenance. We were to maintain
communication between Field HQ as long as possible and if
necessary, destroy our equipment and join the nearest
Infantry or Armored unit. The first site I worked on was on
the Maginot Line, which was built to defend France after WW
I. These old fortifications had been repaired and outfitted
to be headquarters for all American forces to pull back to
in case of attack by the Communist Bloc.
In 1960 I returned from the Army and
went to work for the Missouri Pacific R.R., Signal Dept. in
Little Rock, AR where I met Rosa. We married in April of
1962. I worked all over the Missouri Pacific System from
Nebraska to Illinois and down to Louisiana. I was only home
on weekends.
In 1963 I learned that the North Little
Rock Police Dept. was hiring. That was of interest since it
would keep me home. I took the test and was hired in Aug.
1963. After two years on the job I was watching a stop sign
in one of the better residential areas when I thought I
recognized the driver of a car at the intersection. I
followed the car for three blocks and it pulled into a
driveway. I approached the car and realized it was Raymond
"Pat" Murray. During my tenure I also met Vivian Rae Lena
and W.J. Juneau purely by accident.
I worked for the PD until Sept. 1986.
I retired as Captain of the Special Forces Unit. I worked
in all divisions, but still believe the best job is
patrolman. Unless you experience it you can’t realize what
its like. The adrenalin rush that comes with the radio’s
call regarding an incident and ending up in the middle of it
made it a great job.
From Dec. 1987 to Jan 2002 I worked As
Chief Investigator for 23 attorneys in Pulaski County Public
Defender’s office and retired Jan. 1, 2002.
Spouse: Rosa M. We met in
Little Rock, AR. She has had a 30-year career with
Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. She is now retired.
Personal Information:
Children: 2 sons Comments: 1 with US Postal Service in
Heber Springs, AR, one with Benton Police Dept. in Benton,
AR, both graduates of UALR.
Recollections of BHS: I think
we got a much better education than the kids get now. We
had teachers that kept us in line, made us study and CARED.
We had smaller classes, and not as many subjects, but we did
at least learn to count change and write a check.
Leisure Activities:
Fishing--Visiting different casinos--Yard work & other
piddlin’ activities
We don't have any big changes to our
lifestyle in mind.
