Educational Milestones: completed Newcomb College,
Tulane University , 1958 .
Professional achievements:
because I've never worked outside of our home, I only have
life achievements -- no professional achievements. My
career was that of a wife, a mother, and a homemaker.
Spouse: Lloyd Anthony Newton.
I’ve always known Lloyd since he was from Bunkie. I was a
junior in college before we had our first date. His career
interests are as a sugarcane farmer. Hunting and fishing
are avid hobbies.
My parent’s names were Dr. and
Mrs. J. O. LaPrairie, Sr.
Personal information: Two
wonderful children.
Leisure activity: gardening
(avid) and great interest in antique collecting. I'm not
working now. My current activities involve travel,
needlework, antique collecting, and gardening.
Major events: finishing college,
having children, being a caretaker for the family, keeping
up with friends and great interest in my church (United
Methodist).
Accomplishments of which I'm proud:
I'm proud of the fact that our marriage has been successful
for 46 years, that we have raised two children, who, while
not perfect, are loving, caring, useful adults. Our
children grew up in an ever-changing volatile world, where
social mores were nonexistent, and where guidelines are hard
to find in the outside world.
Things I recall about BHS: The
utter fun of it all. We were so protected by everyone.
There was so much laughter, so much fun! I remember our
teachers who were caring and wanted to fill us with
knowledge, and how unmerciful we were when playing pranks on
them -- Mr. Franks, Mr. Tyrone, Mr. Courtney, and the St.
Romains. I remember Mr. Snoddy (my freshman year), walking
the halls, checking each classroom, holding his keys in his
hand so we wouldn't hear him coming! I remember E. J.
Andrus and John Clark (I think), putting green gum drops on
the eyes of George Washington's picture, and then singing,
“green eyes” and leaving the room by way of the fire
escape! I remember Mrs. Ethel Pope opening her home to all
of us and having unlimited Coca-Colas to drink. I remember
planting the class oak tree in front of the gym under Mr. St
Romain’s watchful eye. That tree is still standing tall and
proud, saying -- "I remember the wonderful class of 1954,
and I know the people in that class have helped in making
this country a wonderful place in which to live." Even with
all of its faults and troubles, I'm proud to be an American,
and I will always remember our class members as fun,
hard-working, caring, wonderful people.
Summary of my last 50 years: I
married a wonderful man and have lived long enough to see
our children grown, happy, productive citizens. I am so
happy to have been able to be a caretaker of my parents and
several other family members. Being able to go, do and live
in this very challenging world and to still be here to write
about it.
If you've read this
biographical sketch of my life, then you pretty well know
what there is to know about me. It still feels impossible
that 50 years have passed. Basically, I have had a good
life; I've been able to weather the storms of life that have
come along and I'm still here! I still remember all the
members of the class of 1954, and wish you all well.
My
hope, for the future: I hope and pray that there will be
peace on this earth in my lifetime, that there will be
breakthroughs in medical science for cures of our most
dreaded diseases, and that a vestige of calmness and common
sense be restored to our land.
