Education
Milestones: B.S. LSU 1958
Career: I
taught school for one year, then raised three children for
the next 30 years. After that I sold real estate in Houston
for 12 years.
Professional
Achievements: My main career has been raising my
children. At age 46, I launched a 12-year career in real
estate, which was very interesting.
Spouse:
Joseph Edward Wheeler - We met after a sorority meeting. My
sister, Murel Elise, her roommate (Margie) and I went to
Margie’s boyfriend’s apartment to have coffee. Margie had
a key, so we barged right into the apartment without
knocking, to find Joe sitting at the kitchen table eating
chicken soup. Little did I know at the time, I’d just met
my future husband!
Spouse’s Career:
Retired Chemical Engineer (Shell Oil Company)
My interests include the stock market,
renovating our house in Louisiana, children/grandkids, our
two energetic Jack Russell terriers, travel, socializing
with friends and family.
Personal
Information:
Children, 3 (Jane / Edward / Elise)
Grandchildren, 2
(Jonathan 14, Katherine 13)
Comments: We’re
proud of all of them
Leisure Activities: reading, gardening, shopping,
enjoying my grandchildren, and taking care of two houses. I
am no longer working.
Working now?
No. If not, current activities: same as leisure
activities
Major Events
since BHS: marriage, births of my 3 children, births of
my grandchildren, and our return to Louisiana.
Of my
accomplishments I am most proud of my children’s
success, getting to this point in my life, learning life’s
lessons (occasionally the hard way) and having friends and
family whom I truly enjoy.
My recollections
of BHS include growing up in Bunkie’s comfortable
nurturing environment, which I found wonderful. I can still
conjure up the smells of that school, of the cotton gin in
the fall, and the twelve o’clock whistle. I remember
laughing and having fun, good friends, interesting teachers,
having pride in our school and our town. I’m so sorry they
tore down our school. Who can forget the Blue Moon, the
Bamboo Room, riding around and around, and smoking, which
was about the worst thing we did.
A summary of your
last fifty years: After graduation, I attended SLI for
one year, and then went to LSU where I graduated in Jan
1958. I married Joe within days of graduation and taught
school on the west bank of the Mississippi. We then moved
to LaPlace and Joe worked at that smelly Norco refinery. In
1963 we were transferred to Houston, and have lived there
ever since. We have two daughters who live with their
families about 5 minutes from us. Our son lives in Plano,
Texas. We’ve been a close and devoted family.
About ten years ago
Joe and I decided to keep his parent’s home in Ball,
Louisiana (about 45 minutes from Bunkie). It’s been a lot
of work, but slowly it has evolved into a very dear retreat
from the city. We spend about half of our time there. It
intrigues me that Leodocia and I are both back in
Louisiana. I don’t think either of us would have envisioned
such a scenario. We’ve always been sort of attached at the
hip, so I don’t suppose it’s too surprising.
I have much to be
thankful for. My parents set a good example for me, as did
my precious grandmother. I married someone with a good
sense of humor, and life has been interesting!
My Hopes For The
Future: It would be lovely to live out our lives in
peace and congeniality with family and friends. I don’t
think we have a lot of regrets, and our hopes are for our
children and grandchildren.
We do not plan any
big changes in our life.
Pertinent Information:
I just
want to say how much I enjoyed seeing everyone at the
reunion. I am awe struck by the successes of our class.
